This is the only picture I took at Dachau Concentration camp. The words, “Arbeit Macht frei” or “Work makes/sets you free” are written on the iron gate which opens into the camp. These are the first words prisoners saw when they entered; these are the first words visitors see. It’s haunting and chilling and after entering, I had no desire to snap photos or do anything other than walk about solemnly. It’s a humbling thing to witness the product of so much hatred, but it was equally powerful to see the small reminders that even those who suffered unspeakable suffering were able to show love and kindness and forgiveness to one another in their darkest hours.
